Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)

Diagnostic Trouble Codes are an alphanumeric code indicating a specific fault. Although some codes are specified by the OBDII standard, manufacturers are free to substitute more specific codes. DTC's are 5 characters arranged as follows: The following table describes each of the four fields of the example code P0123:
 

 'P'
 
 System  Valid characters: PCBU P - powertrain, C - chassis, B - body, U - network

 '0'
 
 Class  Valid characters: 0-3 0 is standard (generic) code, 1 is manufacturer specific, 2,3 vary by main system 

 '1'
 
 Sub-system  Valid characters: 0-9,A-F 

 '23' 
 
 Fault  Valid characters: 0-9,A-F  last two digits describe individual fault
