Air Intake Flow

OBD2 Technical>Interpreting OBD2 Data>Air Intake Flow

Air Intake Temperature
The air intake system is a primary bottleneck to engine performance, and can usually be improved very cost effectively.

Why is air intake a performance bottleneck?
Your engine needs around 2000 gallons of air for each gallon of fuel consumed. Your engine needs even more air if the air is hot, humid, or substantially above sea level. Paper air filters can get dirty and overly restrictive very quickly in dusty environments. More dramatic results can be achieved by mechanically supplementing the vacuum system (turbocharging) or by providing other means of obtaining chemical oxygen (nitrous sytems).

Replacement filters
Premium replacement air filters can provide much high air flow, and can provide better engine protection against finer particles than paper filters. Most premium filters can be easily cleaned rather than replaced, making the price difference narrower. Many claim to gain a noticeable difference in performance and fuel economy. Replacement air filters are very easy to install in almost every case.

Intake kits
Cold air kits, and Fuel Injection Performance kits are next on the list of easy install, inexpensive upgrades. They usually include tubing, some heat shielding, and a larger than stock air filter mounting. These kits attempt to get colder and denser air by getting to the air before it is subjected to engine heat. Installation difficulty and price varies with make and model, here are some good places to check your specific vehicle: Air Filter Systems on Ebay
